September 2016 Review Recap
Holy Cow. This was a busy month and filled with some great reads! I even had TWO 5+++++ star reads in one month. I also had one 5 star and THREE 4.75 stars. I have never had so many great books in a month. In fact, I loved almost every book I read! I posted 14 reviews in September and I’m still about 5 books behind. I can’t review as fast as I read!
Audiobook Review – Better Off Without Him by Dee Ernst
“Mr. Arnold,” I said between clenched teeth, “looking into a lighted make-up mirror with a plus-seven magnification is a humbling experience. Having your husband leave you for a younger woman just plain sucks.”
Better Off Without Him may be one of my favorite audiobooks. Gillian Vance, the narrator, made this fun book amazing. She was a bit more of an actress than most narrators but it never seemed overacted. Her different vocalizations for other characters were amazing. If you don’t read audiobooks, I think Better Off Without Him would still be a great fun read on kindle or print.
I loved to read about a pretty cool mid-forties mom who is hip, sarcastic, smart, sexy and funny. Mona was totally someone I would want to be friends with. I enjoyed how she took the time to test the waters, and that this book wasn’t really a whirlwind romance, but more of a chick lit book with a romance. If you like a book with older couples with kids, I totally recommend Better Off Without Him. I have already grabbed a few more audiobooks from Dee Ernst, narrated by Gillian Vance.

Book Review – Author Anonymous by E.K. Blair
“I mean, who does this? I’ll tell you who . . . me. A middle-aged housewife who was desperate for a little bit of fun.”
Wow. Author Anonymous completely blew me away. It was raw, all-consuming, repulsive at times, addictive, but most of all it was real. Whether it’s really real or not doesn’t matter to me. Who it’s about doesn’t matter to me. I know it is real because I have 4 close friends that went through a lot of what happened here. I could see how easy this can start after being together with Mr. Ana for 29 years and 2 separations (but neither of us cheated). Marriages go through ups and downs and it’s easy to be swayed by some attention you haven’t had in years. To be sucked in by the fantasy. I want to hate Anonymous. I want to scorn her. Many times I did. How can she do what she did to a man who loved her so? To her best friend? to her girls? To her readers? But yet I understood her a bit.
All of these confused emotions of understanding and anger are what made Author Anonymous so freaking good. You may want to read it with a glass of wine or a joint in hand, and make sure you have a protective case on your kindle, because you may have to throw it.
But read it. It’s NOT a pretty romance. It’s completely taboo. It is a warning to not go down that road. I don’t read cheating and it’s all about cheating, but Author Anonymous is unputdownable and pretty amazing.

Book Review – Game On by Sheryl Nantus
“What I want, what I need”–she looked at each man in turn–”is you.”
Game On had so much potential! The author wrote well, and the characters were all very likable. There was good sexual tension and banter. It was all leading up to what could have been a passionate, dirty, delicious, controversial relationship, but it all fell a little flat. I enjoyed Game On, but it needed more passion, more tension, more sex, more controversy. Just more.

Audiobook Review – Forbidden Nights by Lauren Blakely
“Romantic is taking care of a woman. It’s being attuned to her needs. It’s listening to her. It’s making her feel beautiful, inside and out, because she is. It’s knowing her favorite dish, and picking it up on the way home. It’s giving her your coat when she’s cold, and holding open the door, and it’s making sure she has everything she needs before a big meeting.”
I need to gobble up every Lauren Blakely book. She is quickly becoming a top top favorite author. Nights With Him stood very well alone, and I loved reading about a slightly older, more worldly, experienced, professional couple vs. the oh-so-common virgin and the bad boy. There was a great friends-to-lovers story which also included some great details about each of their businesses; but it was HOT, made even hotter by Sebastian York’s sexy voice.

Book Review – Well Hung by Lauren Blakely
“She’s the perfect, all-American girl, like an apple pie, and I just want to eat her up.
I mean, I don’t want that.
Fuck, that came out wrong.
I totally don’t want to eat my assistant. Or bang my assistant. Or bend my assistant over the desk.”
You honestly couldn’t write a more perfect book for me than Well Hung. If someone asked what my favorite kind of book is, I’d say “Check out Well Hung (or Big Rock or Mister O)”. I love the sexy male point of view, the confident/cocky manly man (oh yes, that tool belt! Yum!), the lovable heroine I totally want to be friends with, the incredibly hot sex, the fun banter, the friendship between the couple, and how obvious it is that they belong together. Well Hung took a common theme in books and movies and made it totally unique and fresh. With the perfect blend of heat, humor, heart, and horny male pov, Lauren Blakely has written another book that will easily fall on my all-time favorite list.

Book Review – Roman Crazy by Alice Clayton and Nina Bocci
“There wasn’t a textbook available that could put into words what this city looked like to virgin eyes.”
Roman Crazy was a very well written, rich story that almost transports the reader to Italy. The rich descriptions of the scenery, smells and tastes were a huge part of the book. So much so that the romance almost took a back seat. I would say that the story is much more about Avery finding herself again and finding treasures in Italy than about finding love, which was quite alright for a change. Unfortunately, I found myself easily distracted while reading it without really knowing why. It just didn’t make me breathlessly turn pages the way I wanted it to. I still read the whole book with a smile on my face, I still enjoyed the read, and now I really want to go back to Italy and see the less touristy spots.
Note: I will absolutely read any collaboration these women write again.

Audiobook Review – A Lover’s Lament by K.L. Grayson and B.T. Urruela
“The unknown is scary, and there are no guarantees where war is concerned, but if there’s one thing you need to know—one thing that I want you to carry with you—it’s that I will fight like hell to make it back to you.”
A Lover’s Lament was one of the best military romances I have read. Perhaps knowing that the author lived through this helped with the realism, but I actually felt like I was there. I loved how two people who were kind of sad and hopeless at first reconnected, and you could feel the hope and love build up again. A Lover’s Lament brought me through every emotion from sad, angry, scared, hot, happy and even made me laugh at times. The two authors worked really well together, but the male POV really brought the story to life. Though it was a little predictable and I found the pacing a little off, it was still an amazing read that I highly recommend.

Audiobook Review – One to Chase by Tia Louise
“You don’t do relationships, and I don’t chase.”
“We do fuck, however. Many times and very well. Shockingly well.”
I think I would have enjoyed One to Chase more if I read it instead of listened to the audiobook. Despite the popular narrator, her voice really, really got on my nerves, especially when vocalizing the obnoxious society women. Otherwise, I enjoyed the sexy story, and I enjoyed the male narrator. I loved the dirty talking, persistent, dominant alpha attorney, and I loved how he worked on getting through to her and making them “fly” together. I could have done without the society drama, but I think that is partially because of how it was vocalized. While I can usually separate the story from the audiobook, I had a hard time here, because it really affected my focus on the story. But I can tell I really like Tia’s writing, and will gladly read other books from her.

Book Review – Stroked by Meghan Quinn
“Did she feel the same way I felt? The burning need to get to know each other, mentally and intimately? Did she feel the electricity starting to build between us as well? A spark so heavy, that if our lips connect, it will feel like the entire room will explode?”
Stroked was a fun, over-the-top book told in 3 points of view. From the main couple, as well as the villain of the story, Bellini. While Bellini was there for comic relief (she was so ridiculous it was funny) there was a little too much of her. I didn’t want to be in her head that much at all. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the whole book, so much so that I immediately asked for the next. But I have to say, after reading 65% of Stroked Long (book 2), I realized how much better it can get! I loved Reese and Paisley together, their chemistry was undeniable, and I can’t wait to see snippets of them in upcoming additions to the series, I just wish I saw more of them and less of Bellini in Stroked.

Book Review – Stroked Long by Meghan Quinn
“Jeez, it’s not like once I take my pants off dragons are going to pop out of my vagina and start biting at his ankles. Oh God, what if he’s afraid my moose knuckle is going to whack him in the middle of the night?”
I literally can not gush over Stroked Long enough, and there is no question that it is a 2016 favorite. I cracked up laughing, I swooned, I giggled, I panicked, I cried happy tears, super sad tears and laughing tears. I didn’t expect the magnitude of Stoked Long. While Stroked was fun, light, and a bit over-the-top, Stroked Long had depth and character growth. It covered OCD in a way that it felt like the author had personal experience with it or someone who has it. Ruby is one of my favorite female characters ever in a book, and her colorful humor couldn’t have been a better balance for the awkward and broken Bodi. Don’t get me wrong, this book is very much a comedy, one I laughed out loud during more than almost any other romcom. Stroked Long is a rare book that loved so much, I want to re-read right away.

Audiobook Review – The Dark Light of Day by T.M. Frazier
“We were just us, Broken and bruised, fucked-up and messy, and together we were everything we never thought we could be.”
Holy Cow. Now I get what they call T.M. Frazier “The Evil Ginger”. The horrors she puts her characters through are nothing short of disgusting, brutal and horrifying. In fact, hers are the most brutal books I have ever read. But they are unforgettable and unputdownable, and bring out every emotion. The Dark Light of Day is absolutely a prequel to the King Series, so if you have read that, you must read this! If you haven’t, start here. It almost feels wrong to say that this is one of the best books I have read because of the brutality these kids have been through, but…just wow. The writing was incredible and intense. The love was all encompassing. Despite the very dark brutal themes of the book, there is still a light that shines throughout. <—OMG, I just got the title when typing this! I am so happy I went and picked up a 3 year old book. You’d never imagine that it was T.M. Frazier’s debut.

Book Review – Sex Machine by Marie Force
“I can let go with her and be myself. I don’t have to hide the agony I carry with me every second of every day. She knows. She was there. I don’t have to explain anything to her, and that’s a huge relief.”
Sex Machine was a sexy little romance that felt a little like a second chance romance. The characters were likable, and there was a lot more emotion than I expected from a book with that title. The writing was excellent, and it was a quick read, but quite honestly, I forgot all about it the minute I finished it, and forgot to write the review until I saw it went live. There was nothing AMAZING that stood out to me. It was just a good, easy, sexy afternoon read.

Audiobook Review – Ball Peen Hammer by Lauren Rowe
“She is. Best girl ever. But just as a friend, you know. An adorbsicles, cutie-patootie friend.” I pause. “But the thing is, Z–” I let out a long, tortured sigh. “I really, reeeeally wanna fuck the living hell outta my adorbsicles, cutie-patootie friend.”
I think that Ball Peen Hammer must be better on audible than reading it. I’m just not sure how easy it would be to read all the slang and bro words. But listening to it was pretty funny. The narration was excellent, and it couldn’t be easy to speak like Keane. I am so glad I stuck with this book. At first, I couldn’t stand the language, but I was kind of giggling too. Once I stopped thinking of the douchey guy I know that talks like this, and let myself laugh at it, I enjoyed it more. But the best part to me was how I fell for the guy I couldn’t stand at first, and how a book I was thinking of putting down turned into one I loved. I loved how this road trip between complete strangers brought out the best in both of them, turned into a great friendship, and then the romance came. If you are ready to laugh and not take it seriously, and you think you can handle “bee tee dubs”, I think you should grab this audiobook for a totally different romcom experience.

Book Review – Outsider by Olivia Cunning
“Love is Love. It is eternal. It is a blessing. Love is not always easy or as we expect it to be, but it is worth the struggle. Love is always worth a fight.”
I love this threesome when things work. They work great in the bedroom, but you know how it is when there are three? One seems to feel like an outsider. They all seemed unhappy for a lot of the book with Reagan obsessing over the tabloids and the guys trying to help her through it. Dare and Trey’s family was my favorite part (besides the sex) and I loved getting more about Trey and Brian. I think that Outsider was too long at over 500 pages. I usually like long, but it began to drag and become repetitive in the middle. Don’t get me wrong, I loved reading it the whole time, but Reagan really wore on me. I just wish she were happier. That being said, I can’t wait to read more in the series, I want the rest of the band’s story!

2. Well Hung by Lauren Blakely
From New York Times Bestselling Author Lauren Blakely comes a HOT new standalone romance…
Here’s what you need to know about me — I’m well-off, well-hung and quick with a joke. Women like a guy who makes them laugh. Even better if he’s loyal and hard-working. That’s me.
Enter Natalie. Hot, sexy, smart, and my new assistant. Which makes her totally off limits…
Hey, I’m a good guy. Really. I do my best to stay far away from the kind of temptation she brings to work. Until one night in Vegas…
Yeah, you’ve heard this one before. Bad news on the business front, drowning our sorrows in a few too many Harvey Wallbangers, and then I’m banging her. In my hotel room. In her hotel room. Behind the Titanic slot machine at the Flamingo (don’t ask). And before I can make her say “Oh God right there YES!” one more time, we’re both saying yes–the big yes–at a roadside chapel in front of a guy in press-on sideburns and a shiny gold leisure suit.
We’ll just untie the knot in the morning, right?
The trouble is . . . I don’t know how to keep my hands off my soon-to-be ex-wife.
*WELL HUNG is a sexy standalone romantic comedy!*

3. Double Team: A Menage Romance by Sabrina Paige
The President’s daughter. Two professional athletes. One giant scandal. They’ll show her that two bad boys are better than one.
I can’t stand arrogant bad boys – especially not when they’re my loud, obnoxious new next-door neighbors. Not even when they come in muscled, tattooed, too-hot-for-their-own-good packages.
I’m a good girl – successful, responsible, and smart. I have to be – the eyes of the nation are on me.
I’m the daughter of the President of the United States.
Dating a filthy, cocky, possessive football player would be the ultimate scandal.
Falling in love with TWO arrogant athletes in the middle of my father’s re-election campaign?
That would be another thing entirely.
I’m twice as screwed.
Author’s Note: This is a MFM ménage romance! So if you’re not into the idea of two hot athletes falling head over heels for one girl, then take a pass on this one! There are no M/M scenes – this is all about the woman. There’s basically no football in here, either. But let’s be real – are you reading one of my books for the football? 😉

5. Alpha Boxed Set by Jasinda Wilder
For a limited time only, read all three of the acclaimed, award-winning Alpha Series books in one exclusive collection.
ALPHA:
The first time it happened, it seemed like an impossible miracle. Bills were piling up, adding up to more money than I could ever make. Mom’s hospital bills. My baby brother’s tuition. My tuition. Rent. Electricity. All of it on my shoulders. And I had just lost my job. There was no hope, no money in my account, no work to be found. And then, just when I thought all hope was lost, I found an envelope in the mail. No return address. My name on the front, my address. Inside was a check, made out to me, in the amount of ten thousand dollars. Enough to pay the bills and leave me some left over to live on until I found a job. Enough to let me focus on classes. There was no name on the check, just “VRI Inc.,” and a post office box address for somewhere in the city. No hint of identity or reason for the check or anything. No mention of repayment, interest, nothing…except a single word, on the notes line: “You.” Just those three letters.
If you receive a mysterious check, for enough money to erase all your worries, would you cash it?
I did.
The next month, I received another check, again from VRI Incorporated. It too contained a single word: “belong.”
A third check, the next month. This time, two words. Four letters. “To me.”
The checks kept coming. The notes stopped. Ten thousand dollars, every month. A girl gets used to that, real quick. It let me pay the bills without going into debt. Let me keep my baby brother in school and Mom’s hospice care paid for. How do you turn down what seems like free money, when you’re desperate? You don’t. I didn’t.
And then, after a year, there was a knock on my door. A sleek black limousine sat on the curb in front of my house. A driver stood in front of me, and he spoke six words: “It’s time to pay your debt.”
Would you have gotten in?
I did.
It turns out $120,000 doesn’t come free.

And I didn’t know at the time, but my future even had a name . . . Dante Amato.
Over the weeks that followed, he pursued me with reckless abandon. He broke down my walls and ignored all the reasons we were completely wrong for each other. He made me feel something I hadn’t felt in years . . . something so real it terrified me.

7. The Silent Waters by Brittany Cherry
Moments.
Our lives are a collection of moments. Some utterly painful and full of yesterday’s hurts. Some beautifully hopeful and full of tomorrow’s promises.
I’ve had many moments in my lifetime, moments that changed me, challenged me. Moments that scared me and engulfed me. However, the biggest ones—the most heartbreaking and breathtaking ones—all included him.
I was ten years old when I lost my voice. A piece of me was stolen away, and the only person who could truly hear my silence was Brooks Griffin. He was the light during my dark days, the promise of tomorrow, until tragedy found him. Tragedy that eventually drowned him in a sea of memories.
This is the story of a boy and girl who loved each other, but didn’t love themselves. A story of life and death. Of love and broken promises.
Of moments.

There’s also the tiny problem of Joel wanting another girl. And as for Jethro, well… he doesn’t do girls. Or maybe he doesn’t do relationships. He certainly doesn’t do boys, so he isn’t doing his best and very male friend… right? Much less his male friend and me at the same time.
So it’s fine to crush on them. And write a serial story on my blog in which we are together. All three of us.
Whew.
I mean, it’s okay. It’s perfectly safe. They’ll never even know I exist, much less find out about my blog and my secret fantasy about them.
Right?
…Yeah, that’s what I thought, too.
Warning: This book contains two super-hot boys and a nerdy, funny girl who has the hots for them.
Warning 2: This book may set you on fire. Handle with caution.
Warning 3: This book is funny, and dark, and angsty. It is NOT a love triangle. It is a relationship between three people with a happy ending.
*** Candy Boys is a standalone, full-length romance with an HEA. This special edition includes a second full-length standalone novel, RIOT, as a special thank you to my readers, for a limited time. ***

She hates that I’m in the mob, but I don’t give a f**k. I’m a killer and I’m good at it. I do what the familia tells me to do, and I don’t ask questions.
Until they order me to take care of her.
Now I have to keep her safe. And I’m going to give her more than just my help.
I’m going to make every inch of her body mine.
Olivia
That gorgeous bastard is back and he’s taking what he wants.
Marco Fabbri is hard and unrelenting. He’s the kind of man I know I shouldn’t want. I made the mistake of letting his hands slide between my thighs once, and I swore I’d never do it again.
Now he’s back and his lips are pressing against my neck. He makes me beg Yes when I should be saying No.
Marco is a bad man. When he lifts my hands above my head and presses me against a wall, I know I’m going to give in.
It’s only a matter of how rough he makes it.
Strapped is very steamy and filled with action. It’s only recommended for audiences 18+. This is a standalone novel with a guaranteed HEA! Plus, it includes the novel You’re Mine absolutely free!

To make matters worse, she’s nursing a broken heart thanks to the end of her longtime relationship. Wild rebound sex is definitely not the solution to her problems, but gorgeous hockey star Dean Di Laurentis is impossible to resist. 17. (tie) Can’t Touch This by Pepper Winters and Tess Hunter
From New York Times Bestseller Pepper Winters writing as Tess Hunter, comes a sarcastic, sexy standalone full of men with big ‘you know whats’, puppies, pigmy pigs, and swoon-worthy moments.
I don’t want to touch it.
I really, really don’t.
He’s egotistical, crass, and my patient’s owner–which makes him totally off limits.
Yep, that’s right. He owns the wiener I’m currently working on.
A wiener dog–get your dirty mind out of the gutter.
I’ve also worked on his Spoodle, his Cocker-shitzu, and a Cheagle–don’t ask. (And no, it’s not a sexual position).
It doesn’t help that he also represents most of my joint-owned veterinary practice’s small clientele. We’d only just opened the doors a few months ago, and in he strode with a yelping Taco Terrier. One haughty look at our sparkling new facilities, he’d demanded royal treatment, even though I was currently finger deep up a squalling tom cat.
Ever since then, he expects me to serve him.
Any time. All the time.
Him and his revolving zoo of dogs.
One of these days, I’m going to swat him for being such a pompous ass but I can’t deny the way he handles his charges makes me want to see past the ‘do as I say and don’t ask questions’ barking exterior.
But then last week…he caught me staring at his um, cough, package.
His bossy commands switched to a cocky smirk.
He gave me permission to do something I promised myself I would never ever do.
I can touch it.
If I want…

19. Playboy Pilot by Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland
From New York Times Bestselling authors Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland, comes a sexy new standalone novel.
Money or love? Which would you choose?
You probably just answered the question in your head thinking it’s an easy decision.
For me, it’s not. Did I mention it’s a lot of money? A hell of a lot.
I needed to go far away to think it through.
As I embarked on an impulsive trip, I hit a detour when I met sexy Carter in the airport lounge. We struck up a heated conversation.
Then, he left.
I thought I’d never see him again.
But fate had other plans.
Surprise! He was the pilot of my flight.
The bigger surprise was the adventure that followed after the plane landed.
Carter was dangerous and always on the move.
Even though our connection was magnetic, I knew it was only temporary.
He would give me tickets, and I would follow him around the world to exotic places.
A bevy of flight attendant exes and rumors about Carter’s reputation were never far behind.
I didn’t know what to believe.
But I was addicted. Nothing else mattered anymore. And I was going to get hurt. Because a part of me wanted to be the one to finally ground the playboy pilot.
At the very least, he was taking me on a thrilling ride.
All good things must come to an end, right?
Except our ending was one I didn’t see coming.

20. (tie) Benched by Abigail Graham
Mr. Right has never been so freakin’ wrong.
I’m a single mom and a cop. When some arrogant superstar thinks he can speed through my town and smirk and charm his way out of a ticket, he’s wrong. I wrote the ticket and impounded his car.
Then he moved in next door.
This muscled up god with his glorious physique, panty-dropping smile and smart mouth is my new neighbor. He hates the ‘burbs, but that doesn’t seem to stop him from flirting with me every chance he gets. As if strutting around in boxers with his abs and chest on display is enough to make me forget his snide comments and wisecracks. Oh sure, he knows how to turn on the charm… like I’ll fall for that.
I bet that would make a great story, bagging the cop that gave him the ticket- but I’m not some ditzy arm candy lining up to be the next notch in his bedpost.
I don’t have time to fool around. It doesn’t matter if he’s hot, and younger than I am, and just looking at him makes my legs shake.
The closer we get, the more I think I misjudged him. Somewhere beneath that arrogant smirk is a good man, maybe even the right man, but my past threatens to shatter us both…
BENCHED is a standalone, full-length romance with an HEA. This special edition includes a second full length novel, Player’s Princess, with an all new, exclusive epilogue!

20. (tie) P*rn Star by Laurelin Paige and Sierra Simone
You know me.
Come on, you know you do.
Maybe you pretend you don’t. Maybe you clear your browser history religiously. Maybe you pretend to be aghast whenever someone even mentions the word porn in your presence.
But the truth is that you do know me.
Everybody knows Logan O’Toole, world famous porn star.
Except then Devi Dare pops into my world, and pretty soon I’m doing things that aren’t like me—like texting her with flirty banter and creating an entire web porn series just so I can get to star in her bed. Again. And again.
With Devi, my entire universe shifts, and the more time I spend with her, the more I realize that Logan O’Toole isn’t the guy I thought he was.
So maybe I’m not the guy you thought I was either.
