Recap and Bestsellers for December 2016

01/06/2017

I caught up on some reviews last month and posted 15 reviews! It was a great month of reading with TWO 5++++ star reads that both ended up on my Best of 2016 list. (Check it out and enter for one of two $25 Gift Cards).

The Bestsellers (after the review recap) are all based on clicks on my links for the month. Being Brooke was by far my biggest seller, so that means a lot of you read it! I hope you loved it as much as I did!

Book Review – No Trespassing by KD RobichauxSTARS_4.5FLAMES_4.25

“You site-stealing, dream-crushing, arrogant bag of dick tips!”

No Trespassing was like a breath of fresh air. Well, actually more like a breath of earthy, underground cave air, as most of the book took place in the catacombs beneath NOLA. It was fun, passionate, exciting and completely unique. Emma, the heroine, was a feisty nerd who made me laugh, and Dean was a sexy, take charge man with knowledge and experience. Who knew that archeology could be so fun and sexy? If you want a unique, fun and sexy read with insta-love, I highly recommend No Trespassing. I’m hoping she at least comes out with a novella to follow this up, because I want more!

Book Review – Smut by Karina HalleSTARS_4.25FLAMES_4.25

“She’s a bit much to take at times and I’m certain she still thinks I’m the world’s biggest wanker— literally and figuratively— but I was getting used to her company. Writing with her was fun. Fighting with her was even more so. Maybe even hot. And hot is exactly what we need to bring to the table in order to rake in the dough.”

I really enjoyed Smut by Karina Halle. It gently poked fun at the indie romance genre, but it wasn’t nasty, it was true. I love an enemies to lovers romance and Smut filled the bill with nerdy times, banter, fun, laughter and sexy times. It was cool to read what an author goes through, and what happens behind the scenes of publishing a quick smutty novel. The narration was was pretty good, though his voice wasn’t quite as sexy as I would have liked. Still, if you are looking for a fun, light, sexy and unique read that delves a bit into the mind of an author, Smut totally fits the bill.

Audiobook Review – The Dirty Players Duet by Tia LouiseSTARS_4.5FLAMES_4.25AUDIO_ICON_3.5

“Zelda Wilder is no princess. The closest I am is a dirty Cinderella, an orphan on the run, and that’s not the kind of girl for a prince.”

The Dirty Players Duet is a Cinderella Story filled with deception, lies, action, espionage, sabotage, kidnapping, hot sex, romance, political intrigue, human trafficking, assassination plots and more. It was truly an unputdownable roller coaster ride of a read that grabbed me so much I wasn’t able to do anything but listen. The Dirty Players Duet needed to span two books because it is truly an epic tale of two couples told in a very unique way. My only complaint would be the male narrator in the first book, who had no sex appeal at all.. Still, I highly recommend this series, however you read it.

Book Review – Destiny On Ice by S.R. GreySTARS_4FLAMES_4

“I hate him but my hooha disagrees”

Destiny on Ice by SR Grey was a fun and sexy sports romance. Though the storyline was predictable, it was a ton of fun watching it play out. Aubrey was fun and likable with an awesome inner voice, but sometimes it seems she was speaking her thoughts out loud rather than thinking them, I wasn’t sure. I love the banter in an enemies to lovers story, and there was a lot of it in Destiny on Ice. All in all this was a light, fun read that kept a smile on my face the whole time.

Book Review – Out of Bounds by Lauren BlakelySTARS_4.5

“I’m just a twenty-six-year-old guy who’s got his shit together and wants to go out with a woman he works with—a woman who has her act together too.”

You don’t need to like sports romances to enjoy Out of Bounds by Lauren Blakely. It had everything I love in all of her books. Humor, banter, intelligent, mature characters who respect each other, dirty talking, just the right amount of hot sex, and a small bit of angst to keep it real. Once again, Lauren Blakely hit it out of the park (wait, I guesss I should say kicked?)

Book Review – Jaded Hearts by Harper SloanSTARS_4.25

“Get these pants off me. I don’t even care that they’re unicorns and a print I had to hunt down because all those eager bitches always steal the best ones first. Cut them off now. Cut them off!”

I have ridiculously high expectations for a Harper Sloan book, especially one that spins off of one of my favorite series ever. I really enjoyed Jaded Hearts a lot, but it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. I felt like nothing really happened through a lot of the book, and I was wanting some action or some angst. It was just too easy for the couple; neither of them even stood in their own way with doubts, they were very sure of their feelings right away. With a stalker on the loose, a little action through the story causing tension and fear to build would have been welcome. Instead, the threat basically disappeared through the story. I loved the characters, I loved Harper’s writing, but I just felt like I wanted a little more action or tension in the book to make it a true 5-star read that had me watch a couple’s struggle and then see them come out stronger in the end. I still loved it though, and totally look forward to the rest of the band’s books.

Book Review – Dashing Through The Snow by M. LeightonSTARS_4

“He’s sucking me in, pulling me under. He’s an avalanche and I’m being swallowed by him. A perfect stranger. How does he do it? How has he managed to throw me off, drag me in, lift me up, all in the course of a few minutes?”

I really enjoyed the quick and sexy Christmas novel, Dashing Through the Snow. Though is uses the common trope of getting snowed in on Christmas with a stranger, M. Leighton was able to keep it fresh, fun and sexy. Though I wasn’t thrilled the way the angst played out, I still totally enjoyed this sexy, romantic Christmas story.

Book Review – Stealing Christmas by Alexa RileyFLAMES_4

“I’d never heard her speak a word, and yet I knew she was kind. I’d never felt her touch, yet I knew she was tender and sweet. I’d never kissed her lips, yet I knew that she was the one. That she was going to be the mother of my heirs and the wife at my side. I knew all of that, and so I created this party and made sure she would be here.”

Despite my review sounding like I disliked it, I didn’t.  I sat and read it on one sitting. If you don’t really think about it, it’s a quick, fun and sexy read. But after writing so many books I thought the pair of authors would evolve and improve and it basically seemed to me that they spent a few hours, followed a formula that worked and churned it out. I also thought he was a bit too creepy, but she was sweet and likable, though I have no clue what she saw in him.

If you like the quick books with the creepy recluse and the virgin, filled with insta-love and breeding, Stealing Christmas is a kind of cute, sweet and dirty choice.

Book Review – Being Brooke by Emma Hart

“Freaking hell. How long have I been sitting on the damn floor? Too long is clearly the answer here. I don’t want a dead leg. Why does it hurt? It shouldn’t hurt. Oh my gosh. I need a new leg. Quick, someone dial nine-one-one. It’s never going to— Oh. It’s gone.”

Being Brooke was one of my favorite books of the year, and is also going on an all-time favorite list. It was fun, quirky, silly and sexy. It’s a happy, easy book, and Brooke’s hot mess of a personality made me realize I am not as bad as I thought! There was so much awkward in the story, but it is the sweet and sexy romantic awkward, like when you bump noses as you kiss. I had so much fun reading Being Brooke, and was so happy reading it that my husband and son must have asked me 50 times why I was smiling like an idiot so much. For that alone, I can’t help but give it my highest rating. I am so, so happy to read that Carly is getting her own book next!

Audiobook Review – Walk of Shame Series by Victoria AshleySTARS_4.5

“I don’t fuck like a boy, I fuck like a man. I like it wild, wet, rough and rowdy. If you want a lover this is your chance to back out.”

3 hot male strippers. 3 dirty talkers. 3 books filled with hot sex. Though these lean more towards sex than story, each of the books had a pretty deep story that made you more invested in the hot sex. I totally recommend it you like the cocky alpha-hole who changes for the right girl, has a lot of hot and filthy sex and is totally devoted to the heroine. I will be reading more from Victoria Ashley.

Audiobook Review – Hit the Spot by J DanielsSTARS_4

“You want to bet me that I’ll want to have sex with you before you try and have sex with me?”

Hit the Spot was the second in the Dirty Deeds series, and I totally look forward to the next. I really enjoyed this audiobook, but for me it paled a little in comparison to the first, Four Letter Word, which I loved. I fell in love with Jamie and Tori in the first book, but they seemed to have very different personalities in Hit The Spot. I loved Tori’s feisty resistance until she broke down and gave in, then she became a bit of a doormat. I loved Jamie’s relentless pursuit and cocky flirting until he lost it on her and called her names. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed the story very much, but the thing that really bothered me, maybe because the audiobook made it stand out, was the way Jamie spoke. No pronouns, ain’t, babe. double negatives, nuthin’…these things made him seem a little on the stupid side, and not at all like a California surfer. Still, I love my pushy alphas; I am enjoying the series and totally look forward to the next.

Book Review – Mr. Bossy by Danika DareSTARS_4

“I felt like I was living in a fairytale. A filthy, sex-filled fairytale.”

The last few quick and dirty reads I have read were a little too porny for me and lacked sophistication, and although Mr. Bossy is still total lady porn, there was something more. It was sexier, it was smarter and had more story than others I have read (and didn’t use cum as a verb). While some of it was still a bit pornier than I like, it still did its job. I enjoyed it, and ahem…had a satisfying end (so did Mr. Ana).

Audiobook Review – From Sand and Ash

“Somehow, the hope is the only thing resistant to the fear, and it is that hope that makes the next breath possible, the next step, the next tiny act of rebellion, even if that rebellion is simply staying alive.”

From Sand and Ash is one of the most important books I have read since I began blogging. I feel like everyone should read it. The more we know about the past, the more we can recognize if it starts again in the future. The horrors of WWII are not sugar coated in any way, and Amy Harmon transports you to Italy during all of the events. There was so much background, and you know the characters so well that you feel like you are Eva. I literally felt her fear, and as I write this, I am flashing back to moments in the book and I’m crying again. Being Jewish, this story also helped me understand a bit more of my parents, who were children during this time. But you don’t have to be Jewish to relate and connect to this book. I honestly think From Sand and Ash should be required reading for high school students the way The Diary of Anne Frank is for elementary.

My words can’t do a book like this justice, but I can tell you that it will not only be on my best of 2016 list, but my all-time favorite list. Amy Harmon is an author that has been recommended so many times. I have several of her books on my Kindle, and just purchased more of her audiobooks. If they are even half as good as From Sand to Ash they will be 5 star reads for me.

Book Review – The Only One by Lauren BlakelySTARS_4.5

“Love isn’t all or nothing. It’s a million variations, and some days are better than others. Some are luminous, and others are muted, but none of them mean the end.”

Lauren Blakely started my year with an amazing book and ended it with another. The Only One was a little more romantic and a little less funny than most of her other books this year, and I loved every page of this second chance romance. It never felt like a novella to me, it was a full, rich story that never felt rushed, and it was filled with romance, dirty talking, hot sex, humor, and mature characters who aren’t overly prone to overreacting. It amazes me how much I love every single thing Lauren Blakely writes, and I will be dropping almost anything else to read what she puts out in 2017.

1. Being Brooke by Emma Hart

From New York Times bestselling author, Emma Hart, comes a brand new standalone novel. BEING BROOKE is a laugh-out-loud, witty, and sometimes highly inappropriate romantic comedy about being in love with your best friend. And how much that freaking sucks.

My name is Brooke Barker…
And I’m a freaking disaster.
No, seriously. I’m a college drop-out working a dead-end job, my best friend Carly’s dog gets more action than I do, and I have more bad dates in my diary than there are movie remakes.
Not to mention I’m completely and utterly in love with Cain Elliott.
The problem? He’s in a relationship. With a girl who’s so plastic she makes Barbie cry herself to sleep with jealousy.
The second problem? He’s my best friend.
My shut-up-and-put-on-Harry-Potter, yes-this-is-your-shirt, help-I-have-no-power, crap-I’m-out-of-tampons, kinda best friend.
And that’s all he can be, right?
Right.

2. Mr. Bossy by Danika Dark

It had been such a simple idea. Help the hot billionaire make his cheating ex jealous.
And he wasn’t just any billionaire. He was a filthy-talking Russian who was bossy as hell, gorgeous as sin, and wouldn’t take no for an answer. And he was paying well.
Thirty thousand dollars, half up front, to spend the weekend with a handsome, filthy-talking billionaire. Who could resist? Not this exhibitionist good girl.

Filthy-talking Russian.
He walked into her club looking for the type of woman who could accommodate his needs.
He found so much more.

Exhibitionist good girl.
She was in the business of temptation, and he was temptation incarnate.
He had money, looks, and a proposition that even she couldn’t resist.
Would Mr. Bossy make her break all of her rules?

Warning: This is a filthy, smut-filled, sheet-clawing, over-the-top, love story about finding forever in all the wrong places. This is romantic, smoking hot ladyporn at its dirtiest.
This standalone contains a HEA and a satisfying Epilogue. Enjoy. 18+ recommended.

3. Naughty Boss by Whitney G.

He definitely wasn’t supposed to get that email…

Subject: My Boss.

Have I already told you that I hate my boss today?

Sexy as hell or not, this pompous, arrogant, ASSHOLE asked me to pick up his dry cleaning the second I walked through the door. Then he told me that I needed to take his Jaguar to a car wash that was ten miles outside of the city, but only after I needed to stand in a never-ending line to buy some type of limited, hundred-dollar watch.

I honestly can’t wait to see the look on his face two months from now when I tell him that I’m quitting his company and that he can kiss my ass. KISS. MY. ASS.

All those former fantasies about him kissing me with his “mouth of perfection” or bending me over my desk and filling me with his cock are long over. OVER.

Your bestie,
Mya

PS–Please tell me your day is going better than mine…

Subject: Re: My Boss.

No, you haven’t already told me that you hate your boss today, but seeing as though you’ve sent me this email directly, I know now…

Yes, I did ask you to pick up my dry cleaning the second you arrived to work to day. (Where is it?) And I did tell you to take my Jaguar to the car wash and pick up my thousand-dollar watch. (Thank you for taking five hours to do something that could be accomplished in two.)

You don’t have to wait two months from now to see the look on my face when you tell me you’re quitting. I’m standing outside your office at this very moment. ( Open the door. )

No comment on your “fantasies,” although I highly doubt they’re “long over.”

Your boss,
Michael

PS—Yes. My day is definitely going far better than yours…

5. Jaded Hearts (Loaded Replay Book 1) by Harper Sloan

Signing with Brighthouse Records was supposed to be everything we ever wanted—our better life. Our chance at everything we never had but always wanted. All our dreams would finally come true and we were on top of the world.
It was our chance at the happiness we never had in life.
Our every desire was at our fingertips and the power of that feeling was all consuming. But then it took every dream we thought would come true and it slapped us in the face with the cold hard reality.
Dreams were just that…something that floated on the cusp of untouchable, taunting you with every graze of your fingertips before slipping even further away.
Happiness…that feeling is a joke.
In the end it became painfully obvious that each of us would always have each other, but we would forever be alone.

Jaded Hearts will kick off the Loaded Replay series – which will be a series of interconnected standalones. The cast and crew of Jaded Hearts was introduced to us for the first time briefly in Unexpected Fate. You do not need to read that book in order to fully enjoy Jaded Hearts. Happy reading!

6. Bluefield Bad Boys: The Complete Series by Tess Oliver

BLUEFIELD BAD BOYS The Complete Series contains all three, full-length novels from New York Times bestselling author Tess Oliver.

DIRTY SHAME
We were prisoners of forbidden love, just like Romeo and Juliet but without the poetic, old English double speak and Italian marble balconies.

A coal miner’s son, Kellan Braddock always knew he’d follow in his late dad’s steel toed boots. He also always knew that he’d never love anyone as much he loved Rylan Merritt. But sometimes love isn’t enough.

Seven years ago, Rylan Merritt left Bluefield Ridge with her heart in tatters. Now she’s back. And Kellan Braddock, the boy from the wrong side of the tracks, the boy who she loved beyond anything has grown into a man. Will she risk her heart again?

The story of a first love so strong it never fades.

DIRTY TALK
“Sometimes you spend your life looking for something and find out it’s been right in front of you the whole damn time.”

The premature death of his dad and a tumultuous childhood has left coal miner, Tommy ‘Huck” Sawyer, hardened to emotion and relationships. Andi Sullivan is the one woman who can break through that tough exterior. But Andi, the twin sister of Tommy’s best friend, is destined for better things, away from her harsh father’s control and their sooty mining town. It seems everything is against Tommy ever having the one thing his heart wants most.

Andi Sullivan has achieved her life’s goal of a successful nursing career in the city, away from her hometown. She’s even started dating a doctor. Everything is perfect and dreamy . . .almost. Something, or someone, is pulling at her heartstrings, pulling her back to Bluefield, the place she was so anxious to leave. When an accident pushes Tommy Sawyer, her troubled childhood friend, back into her life, Andi soon finds herself torn between two worlds and two happy endings.

DIRTY SECRET
“All this time I was living my life, and I had no idea that my real reason for being alive was to keep Lenix Harlow safe in my arms.”

Dawson Sullivan needs a break from coal mining and from his friends, Tommy and Kellan, who have both found happiness with true love, something that still seems impossible and out of reach for Dawson. His vacation plans throw him into the path of Lenix Harlow, lead singer of the rock band Ice Cake. Even knowing that a relationship with Lenix would be impossible, Dawson finds himself falling hard for the sultry rock star. He’s found his true love, only happiness is nowhere in sight.

For Lenix Harlow, lead singer of Ice Cake, life on the road and on stage is starting to lose its luster. She needs a break from it all but her manager, Graham Rushton, controls every aspect of her life. Rushton knows the secrets of her past, including the one that, if divulged, would end her career forever. On a break from touring, Lenix meets Dawson Sullivan, and what starts out as a fun fling with a hot stranger soon becomes something much more.

8. A Love Letter to Whiskey by Kandi Steiner

It’s crazy how fast the buzz comes back after you’ve been sober for so long.

Whiskey stood there, on my doorstep, just like he had one year before. Except this time, there was no rain, no anger, no wedding invitation — it was just us.

It was just him — the old friend, the easy smile, the twisted solace wrapped in a glittering bottle.

It was just me — the alcoholic, pretending like I didn’t want to taste him, realizing too quickly that months of being clean didn’t make me crave him any less.

But we can’t start here.

No, to tell this story right, we need to go back.

Back to the beginning.

Back to the very first drop.

This is my love letter to Whiskey. I only hope he reads it.

11. After We Fall by Melanie Harlow

Jack Valentini isn’t my type.

Sexy, brooding cowboys are fine in the movies, but in real life, I prefer a suit and tie. Proper manners. A close shave.

Jack might be gorgeous, but he’s also scruffy, rugged, and rude. He wants nothing to do with a “rich city girl” like me, and he isn’t afraid to say so.

But I’ve got a PR job to do for his family’s farm, so he’s stuck with me and I’m stuck with him. His glares. His moods. His tight jeans. His muscles.

His huge, hard muscles.

Pretty soon there’s a whole different kind of tension between us, the kind that has me misbehaving in barns, trees, and pickup trucks. I’ve never done anything so out of character—but it feels too good to stop.

And the more I learn about the grieving ex-Army sergeant, the better I understand him. Losing his wife left him broken and bitter and blaming himself. He doesn’t think he deserves a second chance at happiness.

But he’s wrong.

I don’t need to be his first love. If only he’d let me be his last.

WOW! Look at those reviews!

15. Womanizer by Katy Evans

A sexy new contemporary standalone romance by New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Katy Evans.

You’ve seen the headlines: Womanizing billionaire player! Watch out! Stay away!
We were just two strangers. Facing a forbidden attraction, a chemical connection. Neither of us expected or wanted it to amount to more.
But I had never been drawn to a guy the way I was drawn to this one: my brother’s best friend, and CEO of the company where I interned.
Even knowing I should stay away, I proved to be too human, after all.
The chemistry was amazing.
The laughs were incredible.
I opened up to him in more ways than I’d opened up to anyone before.
But sex was as far as I’d go.
Just sex because he was too irresistible.
Just sex because I wouldn’t be falling for him.
Just sex because I’d leave in three months, and I’d like for my brother not to kill me, and for nobody to find out he was my wicked little secret.
He wasn’t the One.
He was just a womanizer.
But for a time, he would be mine.

Everything has a price … and I’m willing to pay.
I trust no one. I thrive with control and I’ve learned to be ruthless and coldhearted. A love life? I’m not interested.

But I still have desires.

That’s where Dahlia came in; my treasure. She had never been a submissive before and I was eager to train her.

When I saw her on stage at the auction, dressed in gold, I knew I had to have her.

She’s mine for an entire month. I own her. But one lie changed everything.

She’s going to pay for it. But I’m doing this for her own good. She needs this.

I’m going to make this right. I’m going to heal her.

If it’s the last thing I do.

17. The Only One: A One Love Novella by Lauren Blakely

From the NYT Bestselling author of THE SEXY ONE comes a romance about fate and second chances…
Let’s say there was this guy. And he gave you the most mind-blowing night of sex in your life. And you never saw him again.
Until ten years later.
Now, it turns out he’s the ONLY ONE in all of Manhattan whose restaurant is available for my charity’s gala.
The trouble is, he doesn’t recognize me.
***
This woman I’m working with is so damn alluring. The first time I set eyes on her, I’m captivated and I can’t get her out of my mind. Even if it’s risky to tango with someone I’m working with, she’s a risk I’m willing to take.
The trouble is, she won’t give me the time of day.
But I’m determined to change that.

18. Max: A Cold Fury Hockey Novel (Carolina Cold Fury Hockey) by Sawyer Bennett

The ice is a cold mistress. As the league’s most eligible goalie, Max Fournier has access to his fair share of willing puck bunnies, but right now he’s more interested in bringing home another championship than a one-night stand. A romantic at heart, Max believes in love; he’s just not great at relationships. So when he finally meets a nice girl who’s not blinded by his celebrity, he’s feeling the heat—and the pressure to save her from herself.

Between working two jobs and raising her sister’s kids, Julianne Bradley doesn’t have time for sports—or men. All she knows about Max is that he’s the sexiest customer to ever grace her gas-station counter. And he sees past her tired eyes and makes Jules yearn for things she can’t have: a glamorous fling, a passionate lover, and the time to enjoy both. Max makes her feel like Cinderella, even though Jules has enough baggage to crush a glass slipper. Luckily, he’s no prince—only a fierce competitor determined to win her heart.

Sawyer Bennett’s New York Times bestselling Carolina Cold Fury series can be read together or separately.

19. Smolder by Melinda Minx

Guess who’s on the f*cking naughty list?

I live for three things: Hunting, fishing, and fighting. Once a SEAL, always a SEAL. But if there’s one thing I do best, it’s making women scream for more.

Tough luck, because all they ever get is one night.

But when Andrea winds up numb and freezing on my doorstep, I can’t keep my f*cking hands off her. I warm her up, from her full lips down to her long legs, and I don’t stop there.

Then she’s gone in the morning, just the way I usually like it. But I can’t forget those gorgeous, lust-filled green eyes.

When I see her again, some prick’s fingers are wrapped around her throat. Everything goes red.

The next thing I know, I’m in the back of a cop car. Some asshole’s blood is on my hands, and the only way out of jail is a fake marriage to Andrea. But that’s not even the craziest part.

…I want to make her my wife, for real.

This is a standalone, full-length Navy SEAL romance with panty-soaking romance and a smoldering-hot bad boy. Christmasy happily ever after guaranteed.
