Out of Bounds by Lauren Blakely
Contemporary Romance Standalone Novella
Lauren Blakely has become one of my top 5 authors in 2016, which means I will pick up anything she writes, even a football romance. Every single book, especially the more recent ones in first person, have just been the perfect blend of humor, heat and heart, and Out of Bounds was no different.
I usually find novellas a little lacking in story and substance, but except for the fact that I devoured Out of Bounds in one sitting, I don’t think I noticed it lacking anything a full-length story would have had. And just so you know, if you are like me, and not really a fan of football romance, don’t worry about it. There is more surfing than football.
One thing I love about Lauren’s heroes is that they respect women and their careers. They treat woman as equals while still being hot as fuck and dominant dirty talkers in bed. They never fail to show that appreciation for both their brains and their sex 🙂 Her women are intelligent career women, and not virgins in college.
In Out of Bounds, Dani meets Drew when she rescues him from a flying surfboard while they surfed near each other.
“Because holy patron saint of forearms. His are an homage to arm-porn memes everywhere. My mouth waters.”
When they got a little closer and began to chat on the beach, Dani realized he was the quarterback of the NFL team she was the team attorney for. He didn’t seem to want her to know who he was, he just wanted to be a regular guy, so she never let on that she knew. They enjoyed an amazing afternoon of flirting, then both couldn’t stop thinking of the other.
The team has been going through all types of scandals lately, so when they realize they work for the same team they know they need to tread carefully.
“I’m just a twenty-six-year-old guy who’s got his shit together and wants to go out with a woman he works with—a woman who has her act together too.”
While I guess the workplace thing made it a little taboo, it wasn’t really. And I loved seeing their relationship develop through flirting and banter and sexy times.
“The man was relentless, and he fucked me with passion, and tenderness, and the last time, with sweetness. The last time felt like . . . making love, even on my kitchen counter.”
There was everything you’d find in a full length book, romance, banter, a little angst, great sex and a full story. It was like having a mini chocolate cake that you can devour yourself all in one sitting.
- Fast paced, easy one-sitting read that didn’t feel rushed.
- Filled with sexy and fun banter.
- I smiled the whole time.
- I loved both characters.
- Dirty talker.
- Intelligent career woman.
- Had everything I love in a book, just quicker.
- I can’t think of one, except maybe that it isn’t really super memorable.
