Unexpected Fate by Harper Sloan
Contemporary Romance. 1st in a series, spin off of Corps Security Series. Can stand alone.
I had been struggling with a book everyone else loved for weeks. I couldn’t figure out why I just didn’t want to read. I thought I was broken. I thought the stress of Wicked Book Weekend killed me. Then I had some personal issues happen that put me in a really bad place. I knew that I needed to escape into a book, so I put my current read down and started Unexpected Fate by Harper Sloan. Within minutes, I was smiling and laughing, and I was HOOKED.
Unexpected Fate is a spin-off series from the Corps Security Series, one of my favorites. This one is about the grown kids of the couples in the first books. We met Cohen in Cage’s books, talking about wiener rings and wearing a superhero cape. We loved him as a little boy, and you’ll love him even more as a dirty-talking man. Yes, you can absolutely read Unexpected Fate on it’s own, but I think it would be infinitely better after reading The Corps books and getting to know the background of all the characters.
“I’m going to miss you, Cohen. I know you don’t look at me like I look at you, but one day, you’re going to come back and I’ll still be waiting for you. Waiting for you to see me like I see you. Mark my words, Cohen Cage. One of these days, you’re going to be mine. And until you’re ready….I’ll be here. I’ll be waiting.”
“The boy doesn’t even know how to talk, Izzy. I bet he will be nothing but hands and think with his little pecker. Nope. No way. Not near my baby girl.”
“The next time you allude to those dirty thoughts I know you have about me, don’t think for a second that I won’t drag you to the closest bed to show you just how fucking dirty they’ll get.”
“I’m going to fuck them until I come all over your chest, baby. Then I’m going to eat you until your juices are running down my chin. And when you’re begging me for it, I’ll give you my cock.”
- Visiting with all of the characters from the first series, and meeting some new ones.
- Lots of funny scenes.
- I laughed, cried, and hugged my kindle.
- Some angst and some suspense, but never overdone. Just the perfect amount of each.
- Hot dirty-talker.
- Cohen’s obsession with weiner rings didn’t stop when he was young.
- Very hot sex, a touch on the dirty side.
- Seeing the older generation of Corps guys being all alpha and protective of their kids, and realizing they are just as hot in their 50s as they were when they were younger.
- It was a little difficult to keep all the characters straight, but honestly, this is a small nitpick which wouldn’t happen if I had any kind of memory. (See below, it will help)
The Family Tree:
Axel & Izzy –> Nate and Dani
Greg & Melissa –> Cohen, Lyn, Lila, Cam and Colt
Beck & Dee –> Liam
Asher & Chelsie –>Zac and Jax
Maddox & Emmy –>Maddie and Ember
Sway & Davey –>Stella
This book had everything…action, hotness, and humor. Oh my god the humor! I was laughing out loud immediately. The prologue starts with overprotective alpha male Axel chasing off Dani’s prom date. I freaking died laughing.
“… he’s in ‘protect Dani from everything with a penis’ mode. He looks ridiculous. He has two hunting rifles now hanging by their leather straps over each shoulder. He has two handguns strapped to each thigh, two on each side of his belt, and various knives along the way. His shirt, which he thinks is hilarious to wear when I attempt to go out on a date, says ‘I kill things… and eat them.”
And Cohen? I can’t even… Swoon worthy? Yes. Panty melting? Definitely. Absolute perfection? Abso-fucking-lutely.
With Cohen and Dani growing up together, there is the underlying friendship and unbreakable bond that has been fortified through the years. Dani secretly crushing on him, and Cohen secretly lusting after her… years of sexual tension building. And you can FEEL it jumping off the pages at you. This soul consuming connection that develops over time is what makes their story so unforgettable. And when they finally get to act on this? HOT DAMN!
Let’s be honest here. We KNEW Cohen would be a dirty boy. I mean, come on! His father is the legendary Greg M’ Effing Cage! But nothing could prepare me for the hotness that is Cohen.
“I need your pussy against my tongue and your come in my mouth. Tell me I can have you, Dani.”
The love these two share is heaven sent. It’s achingly beautiful. But it wasn’t easy. Cohen made a commitment to his country and he needs to leave. For an unknown amount of time. But both of them agree to fight for the love they have.
“When it comes to love, it’s always worth the sacrifice. Always. One thing my parents taught me was that when you find the reason for your heart to beat, you don’t ever let it go, and if, for some reason beyond your control, you have to, you fight with every breath in your body to have it back. You are worth that to me. You aren’t asking me to give anything up, Cohen. I’ve loved you my whole damn life… What’s a few more months of waiting if I know you’re coming back to me?”“I won’t be there for you, and that isn’t something a man like me can stomach easily…. But, Dani-girl, I’m also a selfish man, because even knowing all of that, it doesn’t make a difference. It’s you and me, baby. You and me against the world.”
Side note and moment of fangirling: About a month ago Harper told me that she named a character after me. I died a thousand times! I mean, holy effing shit!!! And it is in this book that I got to meet Megan. And I love her. ♡
