I read Flat Out Love by Jessica Park last summer. I have probably read 150 books since then, easily. But this book has remained with me as one of the most unique, special books I have ever read. 5++++ stars for story, 1/2 H for heat.
Julie is starting college in Boston. When her campus housing falls through, she has no place to go, until her mom arranges for a room at her old college roommate’s home in Boston. The Watkins are a unique family. Super, uber-smart, the parents are very involved in academia. Matt, the middle child, is an MIT nerd who is sweet and funny. Celeste, the thirteen year old youngest child is amazingly bright, but totally backward. With no ‘teenage girl’ attributes. She also carries around a life-sized cut out of her oldest brother and idol, Â Finn.
Finn is Julie’s perfect dream guy. Of course, she hasn’t really met him yet. She is living in his room while he travels the world, and she gradually learns more about him through facebook statuses (these were great) and e-mails with Julie.
Here is my original review from Goodreads:
WOW. I flat out LOVED it!!!! What a unique, quirky, funny, sweet, strange, serious, heart wrenching story! I read it in one day and it is definitely a story I will read again. The characters (even Flat Finn!) are so real, and you can’t help but fall in love with each of them. While I suspected the outcome, it didn’t detract from the story. I loved all the pop-culture references. The facebook statuses were so funny, and I loved the geek shirts. I am not a lover of YA books. I’m not sure that this is one, either way, it didn’t matter. It is a smart, deep, well written book that I would recommend to anyone, any age, over 14-15.
Jessica Park will also be releasing a Flat-Out Love app later this year (2012) which will have the story, music and more. I can’t wait!
