Overruled by Emma Chase
Contemporary Romance. First in a series (Legal Briefs) of standalones.
As soon as I saw another Emma Chase book, I jumped on it! But Emma Chase AND a lawyer book? BINGO! Sounds like a dream come true! Overall, I really enjoyed this hot read. Stanton was no Drew Evans, but I still loved Emma’s take on the male POV.
Overruled begins with Stanton and his girl Jenny. In love since they were kids in 3rd grade, Stanton plans to go to Columbia and come back for his girl…only she ends up pregnant. Still, she sends him off to college in the hopes that he can provide a better life for their family. After a year of being away, he has missed his child’s first birthday and is miserable, until Drew Evans (squeee!) comes in and convinces him to go out and take advantage of the open relationship Jenny insisted on.
Stanton and Jenny are from a small town in Mississippi and when Stanton comes home to visit Jenny and his daughter, they are back to a couple. But when he is in New York, all bets are off. This goes on for ten years.
I’ll be who you come home to. They don’t get to keep you, Stanton. No other girl…gets to be who I am.”
While Stanton is a practicing criminal defense attorney in New York City. He hooks up, but remains unavailable, because his heart is home in Mississippi with his girls. He is sleeping with one of his co-workers, a fellow ambitious attorney, Sofia. They have become great friends, and have great sex, but there isn’t really an emotional commitment, which is just fine with the career minded Sofia.
She’s frank, direct, but also fun. A woman I consider a friend – someone I enjoy going out with as much as I enjoy going down on.”
Stanton “The Jury Charmer” was a bit of a panty-melter. Oozing southern charm, especially with the sparking eyes and the “darlin'” you can’t help but fall for him, especially when you see what a devoted dad he can be. Even more so when you see how great in bed he is. And though flirty banter between Stanton and Sofia was awesome, the actual sex was even hotter. Though they both kidded themselves into thinking they were just friends with benefits, it’s pretty clear there is more than that.
There’s not a thing I would change, ’cause she’s fucking incredible….She whispers my name, and I don’t think it’s ever sounded quite so damn sweet.”
So when Stanton gets a completely surprise wedding invitation from Jenny, the ‘love of his life’ and mother of his child, he takes his best friend with benefits, Sofia, back to Mississippi with him to help stop the wedding.
How awkward! For a time, I didn’t really know who to root for! Jenny…
I look at you and I see a thousand summer days. The best moments of my life.”
Or Sofia…
Goddamn, Sofia, I love doing’ you like this. Being able to look at every inch of you. So fuckin’ beautiful.”
But reading a few chapters from Sofia’s POV had me easily pick who I wanted Stanton with.
