Audiobook Reread Review – Games of the Heart by Kristen Ashley

08/23/2017

Games of the Heart by Kristen Ashley

Narrated by Rachel Fulginiti

Part of an interrelated series. Stands alone easily. Contemporary Romance.

I read Games of the Heart by Kristen Ashley back in 2012 and it immediately became an all-time favorite. Since I am listening to audiobooks faster than I can review them, I figured I’d grab a nice, juicy, long re-read. Games of the Heart audiobook is more than double the length of most audiobooks at over 21.5 hours, and the whispersync is still only $1.99! Believe me, I am not complaining about the length. I loved every single minute of it, and it was like getting two for one, because there were definitely two amazing romances in Games of the Heart. While it feels weird sharing a 5 year old review for this, I stand by every word of my original review. So here is my original review, and I will add a little more at the end.

OMG. I abso-freakin-lutely LOVED Games of the Heart by Kristen Ashley!!!! LOVE-LOVE-LOVE!!!! So, I say this about almost every Kristen Ashley book (because I love them all) but this one, I think, may be my favorite. I loved Mike in At Peace, but I really loved him here. He is an amazing, protective dad, an honest cop, and a HOT, totally alpha guy. Dusty is my favorite heroine to date. She was so cool, I wish I could be as cool, or at least friends with her. She was creative, compassionate, loving & strong, and the two of them together were magic. Mike’s kids were great “No” (weird name that confused me a few times) is a talented musician who plays every instrument, and Clarisse (15) was wonderful. Dusty’s nephew, Fin, was a to-die-for alpha hero in training. Clarisse and Fin’s love was pure and strong and an absolutely wonderful story.Though there was some suspense in the form of Dusty’s sister (Mike’s high school girlfriend), her partner in crime, Dusty’s stalker ex, Mike’s ex-wife and some really nasty high school bullies, this story had less suspense than most of her other books. It was more character and family driven. Though I cried a couple of times, I found myself with a huge smile on my face most of the 3 days it took me to read this nice, long, juicy book.

Dusty’s friends from Texas were awesome, and I hope we see them again soon. I loved how all the ‘Burg crew was brought back into this story and we got to see favorite characters from past books. The whole ‘Burg crew is awesome. I want to move there and hang with all of them!

How can you not love this?

“You’re right, I’m here to right wrongs and I’m gonna do it, Angel. You told me I’d had my last chance but I don’t accept that and I won’t. If you tell me now that my explanation is not enough and you want me gone, I’m not goin’. I’m not giving up. I got one part of my life’s dream still open to me, every sign she gives me is screaming that she’s standing in my arms right now and I’m not gonna be ninety years old, looking back on my life and regretting that I gave up that dream.”

Or this?

“And you’ll get used to bein’ my woman and I’ll explain what that means. I’ll take shit but my woman won’t,” he leaned in and finished, “EVER. Not people feedin’ it to her directly and not indirectly through me.”

Or when her ex won’t back down and calls while they are doing it?

“You got me and you gotta know you got me when I’m buried deep in Dusty, fuckin’ her hard, she’s facedown in bed, lovin’ every stroke and I know this because she’s purrin’ for me like a cat. And when I make her come, she’s gonna say MY name. So with that, you also gotta know you are done. If you don’t get this, Rivera’s out and it’ll be me who explains it to you in a way you’ll finally fuckin’ understand”.

Ummm, HOT. How can you not love Mike?

Fin, Dusty’s nephew, became man of the house at 17 when his dad died. Fin was a mini-me version of Mike, or any of the other awesome ‘Burg guys; an alpha-in-training. Clarisse, Mike’s daughter, fell for him at 15. Who wouldn’t? He was awesome. I loved reading about their young romance. Mike’s ex was an absentee mom. Clarisse had no woman to talk about girl stuff to. Dusty did a beautiful job of stepping up and being a mom that both her nephews and Mike’s kids sorely needed. Kristen writes some awesome kids! I hope my boys turn out as well.

As always, Kristen gave us a great epilogue. But this was the best of all the books. In fact, I’m going to read the epilogue again as soon as I finish this. I highly recommend reading the whole series in order to really get the best experience with this.

Rating 5++++++ stars for story and 4 for heat. LOVED!!!!

I guess I reviewed this when I didn’t do likes and dislikes for every review, so here goes:

Likes:

  • Super long, but never, not once, did it drag.
  • We got two fully developed romances in one story.
  • I love reading about older romances.
  • Even better the second time around listening this time.
  • Despite probably reading 30 KA books since this, it still remains a favorite.
  • Dusty is the COOLEST Kristen Ashley heroine ever.
  • Crossovers from other books.
  • Loved all the side characters.
  • A very visual book, I was able to picture it like a movie in my head.
  • Amazing epilogue

Dislikes:

  • Still couldn’t find one.

Narration:

I think Rachel Fulginiti may be one of my favorite female narrators. The narrations was spot on and she is a wonderful actress without being too “acty”

The Down & Dirty:

Even over 5 years later, I agree with my original assessment that Games of the Heart is one of my TOP FAVORITE Kristen Ashley books, and that’s saying a lot! It was a full, detailed, rich story, filled with second chances, heartbreak, older love, young love, family, teenage kids (my favorite), and one of the coolest heroines ever. I felt the full gamut of emotions while reading this long and well-developed story, and not once did my attention drift, which is rare for an audiobook, and even rarer for a re-read. I was actually very surprised at how much I remembered, because I don’t remember as much for most re-reads, but this stuck with me the first time for good reason. Games of the Heart is a Kristen Ashley MUST READ.

Audiobook Rating: 5+++++ Stars, 4 Heat, 5 Narration

As gorgeous as the Just For The Plot paperbacks ar As gorgeous as the Just For The Plot paperbacks are, don’t let that stop you from listening to the amazing full cast audiobook! Once again, Meghan Quinn hit it out of the park (see what I did there?) with Just for the Plot. After reading around fifty of her books since 2015, she still manages to surprise me, and her storytelling never gets old. Her signature blend of feel-good romance, immature humor, unforgettable friendships, lovable characters, and perfectly delivered spice never fails to entertain me. While I do think Just for the Plot is even better if you’ve read Just for the Cameras first, don’t let that stop you from picking this one up. You don’t want to miss this ridiculously fun, sexy, and swoony @meghanquinnbooks romance. My full review is on the blog.
If Groundhog Day meets a Hallmark Christmas Movie If Groundhog Day meets a Hallmark Christmas Movie sounds appealing to you, then In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren will fit the bill perfectly. This old-friends-to-lovers romance was filled with friends, family, traditions, romance, and holiday spirit. I loved the book and I can’t wait until the movie premiers on Netflix December 2nd. Plus….Rob Lowe? 🤤🤤🤤🤤

🎬 BOOK-TO-MOVIE NEWS! Annabel Monaghan’s Dolly Al 🎬 BOOK-TO-MOVIE NEWS!Annabel Monaghan’s Dolly All the Time is officially getting a movie adaptation! Sony’s 3000 Pictures has acquired the bestselling romance, with Temple Hill Entertainment producing and Gemma Burgess writing the screenplay. The story follows Dolly Brick, a hardworking 39-year-old single mom who heads back to her Rhode Island hometown with her son for the summer to help save her family home. There she crosses paths with Stewart Whitfield, the handsome heir to one of the town’s wealthiest families, who happens to be dealing with a very public breakup. A fake-dating arrangement follows, and we all know how well those tend to stay fake. 😏I haven’t read Dolly All the Time yet, but apparently I need to fix that before this hits the big screen!Have you read it? And if you haven’t, will you be reading it before the movie comes out?No casting or release date has been announced yet, so I’ll be watching for more news! 🎥📚
I can’t believe we’ve reached the end of the Mount I can’t believe we’ve reached the end of the Mountain Men Matchmaker series! 🥹❤️Bad Boy Era finally gives Everly, the family matchmaker who helped everyone else find their HEA, a love story of her own. And of course it’s with a tattooed, brooding, grumpy Irish rugby player who has secretly had his eye on her for years.I loved being back on Fletcher Mountain with all of the couples, the crazy overprotective uncles, the animals, and so many laugh-out-loud moments. Conri turning into a dragon daddy and his relationship with little Stevie were probably my favorite parts. 😂🎧 And if you’re an audiobook reader, LISTEN to this one! Connor Crais’s Irish accent is amazing, and Erin Mallon, Teddy Hamilton, and Emma Wilder round out a fantastic cast.I’m sad to say goodbye to Fletcher Mountain, but looking at this whole series together makes me want to start all over again. ❤️You can find my full review on the blog. The Fall Affair by @vi_keeland transported me to T The Fall Affair by @vi_keeland transported me to Tuscany, and I wasn’t ready to come home! 🇮🇹🍷A high-powered New York divorce attorney, three months in Tuscany, a purple Vespa, a gorgeous vineyard, and a sexy Italian winemaker next door. This had all the sexy Hallmark movie vibes, but with the emotion and heat I expect from Vi Keeland.I loved Allegra’s journey, I fell hard for Matteo, and somehow Nonna managed to steal the show without ever actually being in the story.🎧 I listened to the audiobook narrated in duet by Connor Crais and Andi Arndt, and they were phenomenal. Connor’s Italian accent definitely added to the whole Tuscany experience! The Fall Affair was the perfect little Italian vacation without leaving my house. Now I just need a purple Vespa and my own Matteo. 💜My full audiobook review is on my blog and you can swipe through to get more of my thoughts. I’m case you missed it, Sky’s Edge by @kristenashl I’m case you missed it, Sky’s Edge by @kristenashleybooks is live!!! I am loving it so much! I don’t read a lot of books with my eyes anymore, and I was 50% into the arc yesterday when it released. I planned to finish with the audiobook, but just noticed it’s delayed until 9/22. I can’t put it down I’m loving it so much! My review of the book (not audiobook) should be up this weekend. This is such a fun and unique fantasy series. It takes place in the future, so they have lots of future tech, but they still have the old fashioned man/women societal roles. It features 4 best friends, and I assume they each get their own book in the Four Realms series. Though they each feature a different couple, you need to read in order for the world building. Honestly, this series is fun and unique, and I love how Kristen can take a fantasy and make it so uniquely Kristen Ashley. Sky’s Edge is the second book in the Four Realms Series. I don’t think you have to be into reading fantasy to love this. Book recommendation • romance books • romantasy books • Kristen Ashley

I know there are plenty of sectors where influence I know there are plenty of sectors where influencers are paid to appear. But is that necessary at book events? Is $1000 a reasonable amount for a small author to spend to get someone to talk about their book online? I got a package today with $14.10 postage (authors, use priority mail, it’s cheaper!) and I felt bad the author had to pay that much to send me her book. Take that thousand dollars and send your book to a hundred smaller creators that would be thrilled to receive a package and talk about it for free. Real reviewers don’t charge.
We finally got Everly’s story, and Amy Daws once a We finally got Everly’s story, and Amy Daws once again kept me entertained with her brand of sometimes silly humor filled with heart. I loved seeing all of the Fletcher couples again, and Conri with Stevie and the animals was adorable. The primal play didn’t really work for me in this case, but Everly and Conri were still a hot, fun couple, and I loved that he appreciated all the things about her that everyone else considered “too much.” I’m sad the series is at an end, but there are enough loose ends that maybe we’ll get another spinoff! Either way, Bad Boy Era was a fun way to wrap up the Mountain Men Matchmaker series.
