Same Time Next Year by Tessa Bailey
Narrated by Carmen Vine and William LeRoy
Britta is a waitress working at a bar where her half-brother and his whole hockey team go to hang out. Sumner is the best on the team and is about to be drafted to the NHL but his visa (from Canada) expires on New Year’s Eve. Sumner has been crazy for Britta and she’s had a soft spot for him, so the team begs her to marry him THAT NIGHT because his Visa expires in the morning. And she does! They plan to stay married for 1 year.
Ummm what? First of all, there was no marriage license in sight. Second, they had one meeting with immigration who happened to see them kissing outside, and Boom, here is your green card! Putting that ridiculousness aside, Sumner was creepily obsessed with her. At first, I wrote “This is deliciously dirty!” then…”OK, this guy is super creepy”. He was obsessed with eating her out and her being his WIFE. In fact, he called her his wife a good 50 times in this short novella.
I was entertained and never wanted to put it down, but the ridiculous premise (a quick google search on Visas & green cards would have helped) and the cheesy sex scenes/dialogue really didn’t jive with me. It was short and free though, so I can’t really complain.
Rating: 3 stars (rounded up), 3.5 heat, 4.5 narration
