Wildest Dreams Fantasyland Series: Book 1 by Kristen Ashley
1st in a series. Can stand alone.
This series is AMAZING. Fans of paranormal and fantasy or not, if you enjoy Kristen Ashley, you will enjoy these books. I originally read this entire series about a year ago, but I recently decided that a reread was in order…as it often is with all of my KA books. And this time around, I decided that I needed to write a review to introduce as many people as possible to this series.
The Fantasyland series is based the existence of 2 parallel worlds. One world is like ours, set in present time. The other world is more primitive and there is the existence of magic (including witches, elves, and dragons). There is magic in “our” world too, but it is much less and not openly talked about. Only some witches are aware of the existence of both worlds.
Each human has a “twin” in the other world. They look exactly alike, but they are completely their own person, with their own beliefs and own personality. The most powerful witches have the ability to swap people from one world to another; however, it is not done often because it drains the witch’s power significantly (and for a very long time) to perform the task of transporting.
Wildest Dreams begins with Seoafin (Finnie) of our world paying a witch named Valentine one million dollars to transport her to the parallel universe for the term of one year. She is doing this because she lost her parents many years back and misses them terribly. When she learned of the parallel world, and that a version of her parents existed, she knew this was an adventure she HAD to embark upon. Her friend, of course, thinks she is absolutely INSANE for paying the absurd amount of money to someone claiming to be a “witch” who is going to “send her to another universe”.
The Sjofn of the other world agrees to this swap, but is not forthcoming about her reasons for agreeing to this swap. We find out immediately that Sjofn is escaping her wedding to Frey Drakkar…a powerful raider and commander of the dragons.
Finnie quickly realizes after the switch that Frey is not one of Sjofn’s biggest fans…therefore, because he doesn’t know of the switch, not her biggest fan. Finnie is determined to make the most of this adventure, and she does just that, even when Frey leaves her on their wedding night to go on a raid for 6 weeks.
Shortly after his return Frey starts to realize that “Sjofn” is not Sjofn. He sees that she is not the same person and that something is off. She is surprised by things she should know, and most of all she is kind, gentle, and sweet…all things that Sjofn is not. In an effort not to give too much away, I will just say that the story progresses and Frey begins to fall for Finnie…and likewise, Finnie begins to fall for Frey.
But there are dangers ahead. Frey and Sjofn’s marriage was a political move to secure the fate of their country, Lunwyn. Because of this, Finnie’s safety is at risk. Not to mention, this adventure is only to last for 1 year before Finnie and Sjofn switch back. And Finnie is not sure she will want to go back….
Favorite Quotes:
“I do not know, my wee Finnie, where I came from, but I am beginning to know why I’m here.” – Frey
“She waits for me at windows and buys me dragons. There are reasons we walk this earth, I’m coming to realize mine” – Frey
“And after hours, when we came down, when the strokes became more languorous, the whimpers became more subdued, the groans turned into growls and our eyes grew less fevered, I knew I was in love.”
“Not with a man who would share this with me and give me multiple orgasms multiple times, but with the man I would choose to share this with, trusting him enough to open myself so completely, I was fully exposed and instead of taking everything, he handed me the world.
He handed me the world.
And I was going to take it.” – Finnie
Rating: 4.5 stars, 4.25 Heat
This book is packed with adventure. I truly enjoyed the world creation…Kristen Ashley did an amazing job. It was a perfectly painted picture, and I wanted nothing more than to jump right into the book. Finnie is a strong heroine…with a fair amount of sass…my favorite. And Frey was pure KA uber alpha at its finest…also my favorite. Truly, you do not need to be a fan of fantasy to enjoy this read. It was a wonderful hidden treasure for me. I honestly can’t believe I waited this long for a reread. Pick this one up and give it a try if you haven’t already…you won’t regret it!
