From the author of the #1 bestselling romance, Jake Undone, comes a friends-to-lovers story of longing, passion, betrayal and redemption…with a twist that will rip your heart out.
Skylar was my best friend, but I secretly pined for her. One thing after another kept us apart, and I’ve spent the last decade in fear of losing her forever.
First, it was the cancer, but she survived only to face the unthinkable at my hands. Because of me, she left town. For years, I thought I’d never see her again.
But now she’s back…and living with him. I don’t deserve her after everything I’ve put her through, but I can’t live without her. This is my last chance because she’s about to make the biggest mistake of her life. I can see it her eyes: she doesn’t love him.
She still loves me…which is why I have to stop her before it’s too late.
My Skylar is a STANDALONE story of 99,000 words and a companion to the novel, Jake Undone. It does NOT need to be read in conjunction with any other book.
My Skylar by Penelope Ward is an unputdownable book. It is part of an interconnected standalone series, you do not have to read the others first to enjoy this book – actually, to LOVE this book.
From the start, Penelope Ward ruined any hope I had of sleeping. I just could not stop reading. I was crying by page three. Immediately, you get dragged into the lives of Mitch and Skylar in a way that not many authors can pull off. I laughed, I cried, I cried and I cried and my heart hurt, I ran out of tissues and wine, but keep going because happiness, healing and life lessons are on the horizon (literally & figuratively since I finished just as the sun came up).
I fell in love with Mitch – but wanted to junk punch him a time or two (or three) – I also fell in love with Skylar – who deserved a vagina punch a couple of times (or more), but even in those times I still understood – they were just as frustrated as I was.
Skylar doesn’t feel like she deserves Mitch, and there are times I don’t think she does (vagina punch times) and same with Mitch, he believed that Skylar didn’t deserve to be brought into the life he was now living – he loves her to the point of insanity and beyond – he would do literally ANYTHING for her, even deny his own chance at happiness to spare her his new reality– which makes me love him and makes me want to junk punch him sometimes. (It’s hard to write a review without giving up the entire plot!)
Skylar gets sick, she has to move away to NY for treatment (we see this a little in Jake Undone – my other favorite book – Please read it!!), Mitch visits and vows to always be there for her and he was – until she got even more horrible news then she breaks his heart. She believes that he will eventually resent her for holding on to him and not allowing him to “live” his life. She is only 15 when this journey begins and he is 17 – but when you are going through this type of thing, I can honestly tell you – age doesn’t matter, and it definitely did not factor into this story, because it is such a great story – you forget how young they are because of everything they go through.
Skylar fails to understand how much Mitch actually loves her – that he doesn’t feel whole without her – so she justifies kicking him to the curb for his own good, but he will not be living. Mitch makes mistake after mistake (junk punch time) and Skylar just tries to survive the memory of what they could have been – she has never been able to move on.
“How do you know there’s a God?”
I knew how I wanted to answer that but stopped to think about the best way to explain it to her. “Because once, when I as a little boy, I felt hopeless, like my world was ending. I prayed hard one night and asked him to send me a sign that he was listening.”
“The very next day, I met you for the first time.”
I died at this point – Thud, dead. My heart melted.
Penelope Ward turns up the heat in this installment too, it smokin’ hot.
“What I want is for all of these people to magically disappear and to take you on this table until you scream my name”
- The author definitely researched the medical aspects of this book.
- The alternate chapters for Mitch and Skylar – I love reading what they were both thinking/feeling.
- It was hot – I don’t know how she wove this into the book, but yup – HOT.
- Davey – Best friend a person could have – I love him.
- Seamus – I fell in love with a bird – you will too.
- The invention of a new drink!!!!! – The Weeping Orgasm!
- I got frustrated a little due to lack of communication, but it’s not really a dislike, it was part of their story. I needed to keep remembering that they weren’t my age – they were young and they had A FUCK LOT of stuff going on – so strike the dislike – the frustration led to so much, and was necessary to see the growth of both Skylar and Mitch.
Rating: 5 stars 4 heat
My Skylar will give you every feeling and everything you want in a book. Read it, go on Mitch and Skylar’s journey – watch them grow up and find out if Mitch has what it takes to stop Skylar before she makes a huge – I mean gigantic mistake. My Skylar is truly a journey….from being a teen to growing up. It had everything. Though the stories are interconnected, you truly do not need to read each one.
