So My Ex-Boyfriend Is a Serial Killer by Kylie Scott
Narrated by Andi Arndt
Standalone Contemporary Romance
I’ve enjoyed Kylie Scott’s books in the past, and while browsing the Audible Plus catalog I came across So My Ex-Boyfriend Is a Serial Killer. It was a quick listen that I finished in one day last month. The downside is that it was so quick and light that it kind of went in one ear and out the other, so this review will be quick, as I don’t remember a lot of details.
Sidney’s ex-boyfriend is a serial killer (obviously). She still lives in the same small town where the killings happened ten years ago, and she’s become a bit of a hermit because so many people think she was involved. For some reason she won’t speak up about the truth while he has become the media darling from jail, and he continues to harass her and make her look bad. You might ask yourself “Why doesn’t she move and start a life elsewhere with a new number?” BELIEVE ME, I asked that the entire book. There was NOTHING keeping her there except her desire to play victim.
When she gets a new neighbor, Noah, and he starts taking an interest in her, she slowly begins rejoining the land of the living. I loved Noah. He’s such a good guy, and he stands up for her at every turn, even when she can barely leave her house without being accused of something.
When true crime podcasters come to town and stir everything up again, things go from bad to worse, and Sidney and Noah’s relationship is still so new. I did enjoy the tension of seeing whether they would make it through the chaos.
There were some plot holes and a few threads that didn’t really go anywhere. I liked the concept a lot, but the book sometimes felt like it wasn’t sure if it wanted to lean into romance or true crime, so it didn’t fully land either one. Still, it entertained me while I was listening.
The Narration
Andi Arndt is one of my favorite narrators and always a total professional. This performance felt a little flatter than her usual work, with some awkward pauses during dialogue, but even then, she still delivers a solid listen. I’ve just heard her do better.
The Down & Dirty
So My Ex-Boyfriend Is a Serial Killer is a decent freebie in Audible Plus with a fun premise and a sweet love interest. Some plot elements left me with questions, and Sidney made things harder on herself than they needed to be, but I still enjoyed the idea behind the story. I’ve read much stronger books from Kylie Scott, so if this is your first, don’t let it deter you from trying more of her work.
Rating: 3.5 Stars, 2 Heat, 4 Narration
