Changing Course (Wrecked and Ruined 1) by Aly Martinez
Adult Contemporary. Standalone.
Aly Martinez sure knows how to deliver the feels in a super unique story. I enjoyed the audio version of Changing Course because it was narrated by both male and female, and I enjoyed both of their voices.
Brett and his friend Caleb are hot young cops. One night Brett meets Sarah in a bar, and fell for her hook, line and sinker. Listening to the story of them falling in love was awesome, but from the prologue, you know a big change is ahead. Brett and Sarah had seven amazing years together, and Caleb, his best friend, fell for Sarah’s best friend, Manda. It was like a perfect fairytale.
Until tragedy struck, and both the girls were gone in the blink of an eye.
Sarah might have lived, physically, but the Sarah who Brett loved was gone. From a brain injury, guilt and self-hate, Sarah was not longer the fun girl everyone loved. She became mean, nasty, hateful, and drove everyone away. But she was Brett’s wife. The woman he promised to love forever. She didn’t want him. She hated him. They lived separately, but he still went to her home once a week, despite her hating and pushing him away. He always hoped it would be different, that maybe one day “his Sarah” would be back.
Jesse was a barista at the coffee shop that Brett and Caleb went to every day. She has been crushing on Brett for a while, and finally gets the nerve to ask him out. Jesse is shy and sweet and innocent, but kind of in a rough situation. Is she the other woman? Brett is only married on paper, but he is still a married man, making no promises.
I’m sorry about all of this, I truly am. Please believe me, and think about what I’ve said. I can’t promise you anything more than tomorrow, but maybe one day, the fog will disappear leaving only sunny days ahead.”
Despite the heart wrenching subject matter, there was a lot of fun and funny in this book! There was also a lot of swoony and alpha sexy.
“I don’t see anyone named God here, baby. I want you screaming my name when I make you come, not God.”
“There we go, much better.”
Brett was loyal to a fault. And honestly, he pulled a few really dick moves, and Jesse let him get away with a little too much. They avoided the elephant (or the ex) in the room for too long, but it’s also what made the story so unique.
- Great narrators, both male and female.
- Despite the emotional nature, there was a lot of fun and sexy.
- Very unique story.
- Brett was just such a GOOD guy who just wanted to do the right thing for everyone.
- I loved Jesse and found her to be very real.
- Very hot sex!
- Caleb…OMG, I can’t wait for his story!
- Sometimes I just got a little too frustrated with the characters.
Rating: 4.5 stars, 4 Heat
The Down and Dirty:
Changing Course can absolutely be read as a standalone. It is completely unique and filled with romance, tragedy, angst, humor, sex, love, and more angst. The characters were flawed and real. You almost get two romances for one in this novel. It feels long and juicy and you really get to know the characters. I can’t wait to read the next in the series, and I’m finding Aly Martinez to be a new favorite author!
