“This girl. In love with the boy she can’t have.”
It had been so long since I read Slammed and Point of Retreat! I honestly thought that I had read so many amazing books since, that those books wouldn’t be as good to me if I read them now. I was wrong. If you have not read this series, DO IT. See the Slammed Series order here. I absolutely LOVED This Girl (Slammed 3). I smiled, I cried A LOT (mostly the good kind of tears) and when I finished the book, all I could say was “Holy crap, Colleen Hoover is a genius”.
Seriously, it is rare enough for me to give 5+ stars to a book, but the entire Slammed series is a 5+ star read. I don’t care how old you are, this is an AMAZING series. I didn’t re-read the 2 previous books, though it has been well over a year since I read them and quite frankly, I was nervous I wouldn’t remember them enough. But I had absolutely no problem getting right into, and swept away with This Girl. Then I remembered–these books were one of the reasons I started blogging, and some of the first reviews I wrote. (Ugh, reading them now is embarrassing) but I remembered this suddenly when I felt re-inspired. This last week I have been reconsidering whether all of the work I do on the blog will ever be worth it (PMS). Then I read some amazing books that inspired me to say READ THIS NOW to everyone I could find. This series is one I recommend right at the top of my list to EVERYONE. Any age, any tastes.
“I can’t remember feeling this way since…well, ever. It’s new. It’s scary. It’s exciting. It’s nerve-wracking. It’s calming. It’s every single emotion I’ve ever felt balled up into an intense urge to grab hold of her and never let go.”
That’s exactly how I felt about this book! Colleen Hoover has managed to make magic yet again. This Girl is technically Slammed and Point of Retreat told in flashback from Will and Lakes Honeymoon, from Will’s Point of View. We get little glimpses of them now, on their honeymoon, where Lake is asking him to tell his feelings of all of the major events from Slammed. If you weren’t totally in love with Will before this book, believe me, you will be now.
“Most guys prefer the ass or the boobs. Will Cooper prefers the neck.”…..
“Nope,” I say. “Will Cooper prefers the whole Lake.”
This is not really a retelling from another point of view, it’s all fresh and new, yet familiar. Maybe it’s because I didn’t re-read before it, but I don’t think so. I think Colleen just wove her magic again. There are all-new scenes and there are also all-new slams that are even better than the original ones. I am not into poetry or slams, but these are just genius.
The end…the epilogue. Holy shit, I just sat there, tears streaming down my face, hugging my iPad and thinking holy shit. Pure genius. This is why I love reading. This is why I love blogging.
Likes:
- Every.Butterflying.Thing.
- Every drop of emotions was brought back and more.
- Colleen was able to re-tell a story from the hero’s point of view and kept it entirely new, exciting and fresh.
- I cried my eyes out. Happy tears way more than sad.
- All new amazing slams (And I’m not even a fan of poetry)
- You can’t help but fall even more for the amazing Will.
- The epilogue. Holy hell, the epilogue was amazing.
Dislikes:
- The only slight issue I had was because it had been so long since I read Point of Retreat. I didn’t quite remember Kiersten and felt a little confusion when she showed up.
Rating: 5+++++ Stars 2 Heat
The title of my original review for Slammed was “Slammed was life-changing good“. I will stick with that title for the whole series. It amazes me how all 3 of the books in this series have completely and utterly blown me away. They are completely YA to me, which is not really my cuppa tea, but it does not matter. I even made my 75 year old mom read them. It is so rare to feel this strongly about ALL 3 books in a series, but I can’t deny it. I was left breathless by how powerful a writer Colleen Hoover is.
