“If you want something real, you can’t run away because it scares you.”
Let me start by saying I’ve never been to Tuscany, but now I want to go there and rent a purple Vespa! Vi Keeland has never disappointed me, and every time I read one of her books I ask myself why I haven’t read her entire backlist. The Fall Affair took me on a journey to Tuscany that was so immersive, it really felt like I was there.
Allegra is a high-powered, high-stress New York divorce attorney. She is by far the highest-billing attorney at her firm, and it’s generally expected that she’ll be named partner. Until she isn’t. Then, in a drunken rage, she quits her job. She has to go to Italy to settle her grandmother’s estate anyway, so it couldn’t have come at a better time (sorry, Nonna).
Allegra grew up spending summers at her grandmother’s home in Tuscany. Nonna was one of those grandmothers who lived life to the fullest. She drove a purple Vespa, flirted with young men, and genuinely just enjoyed life. But in order to inherit her land, Allegra must spend three months in Tuscany and learn to slow down and enjoy life herself.
Nonna leased her land to the handsome Matteo, who has turned it into a vineyard. Matteo is the guy who helps everyone around town, and he was genuinely such an amazing guy. But his heart has already been broken by a woman who needed more than the life he could give her, and he isn’t about to fall for a New York attorney who loves her career and is only licensed to practice law back home.
“You scare me, Bellissima. But you’re worth the risk.”
The way Vi described the town and the land absolutely transported me to Tuscany, but Matteo had me ready to move there so I could find my own Matteo! Even though she was never alive during the story, Nonna truly stole the show. Her legacy and spirit were all over this book, and I always love a feisty grandma.
“The scars from loving someone are better than the emptiness from never having loved.”
This was very much Allegra’s story, though, and I really enjoyed her journey. She was a fantastic attorney and had worked so hard to become one. She couldn’t just give it all up for a man, could she? I loved watching her figure out what she actually wanted from her life and whether there was room for both the career she loved and this completely different life she was falling in love with.
I usually write my likes and dislikes here, but honestly, I didn’t have anything specific to list that I haven’t already said, and there was nothing I didn’t like.
The Narration:
The duet narration by Connor Crais and Andi Arndt was phenomenal. Connor is amazing at accents. I have no idea how accurate his Italian accent was, but it worked for me even though I had to slow the audiobook down a lot more than usual to understand everything. But I didn’t mind slowing down for a bit in Tuscany. I will admit, sometimes I got a bit of an “I want to suck your blood!” vampire vibe from the accent, but honestly, even that worked for me.
The Down & Dirty:
The Fall Affair gives sexy Hallmark movie vibes. A big-city attorney who works 24/7 is forced to spend three months in Tuscany, where she meets the burly, sexy, sweet Italian winemaker next door. And I am totally here for it. Vi Keeland took me on a gorgeous summer vacation to Italy without me having to leave my house, and now I just need someone to point me toward my purple Vespa.
Rating: 4.5 Stars, 3 Heat, 5 Narration
