Curvy Girl Summer by Danielle Allen | Audiobook Review
Narrated by Wesleigh Siobhan
Standalone Black Contemporary Romance
As a single plus-sized woman I was so excited to read Curvy Girl Summer by Danielle Allen. *I got an audio ALC from Macmillan Audio* and listened on a trip and forgot to review it when I returned, so it’s been close to two months since I listened. It’s a rare occurrence, but I still remember it very well even after 2 months. I also wrote lots of notes and my likes and dislikes while listening.
This is a Black romance, but I had no problem relating to the heroine. Aaliyah was almost 30 and had a good job, good friends, and was generally happy and felt good about herself until she got around her family. They all pushed her to find a man, but her uncle honestly upset me so much. He harped on her about her weight to the point that it was so cruel that I wanted to kick him in the teeth. It affected my confidence, it was amazing that Aaliyah still loved herself despite her family’s cruelty.
“Existing in my body and not being ashamed of who I was and how I looked was only an act of confidence to people who viewed me as if something was wrong with me.”
She got so annoyed at her family that she said she would be bringing her new “boyfriend” to her 30th birthday party. She just needed to find one before that. She scheduled her first blind date at the new bar across from her building. When he stood her up, the hot bartender took an interest in her and they began some flirting banter, but then he offered to set her up on some dating apps and be her wingman. They planned for her to bring her dates there to the bar and he’s sus them out.
“These can’t be the men God sent down here for us to procreate with.”
This book confirmed every reason why I don’t do dating apps; or date at all. Most men just suck and Aaliyah’s dates turned out to be liars, cheats, and worse. But she always ended the evening bantering with Ahmed the bartender. Too bad he was taken, or at least she thought he was. Their chemistry was amazing and I loved their fun flirtation.
Likes:
- Curvy, confident heroine.
- Hot sex scenes.
- I loved all the characters.
- Fun (and scary) online dating stories.
- Awesome flirty banter.
- Good friend group.
- I loved the way she stood up to her family.
Dislikes:
- The miscommunication went on too long.
- The slow burn was a little too slow.
- The uncle was so horribly cruel, and the rest of the family wasn’t much better.
- I wish there was an epilogue.
The Narration:
Wesleigh Siobhan was amazing. It was almost hard to believe her male and female voices were the same person. The male voice was SO SEXY. The narration made the book even better, and I highly recommend the audio version.
The Down & Dirty:
I really enjoyed Curvy Girl Summer by Danielle Allen. The banter and flirting kept you rooting for them the whole story even when you think you shouldn’t. I admit, this increased my fear of online dating, but who knows, maybe I’ll meet a hot wingman like Aaliyah did.
