Flirting With Fifty by Jane Porter | Book Review

05/17/2022

Flirting with Fifty by Jane Porter

ARC provided by Berkley via Net Galley. Releases 5/24/22.

“She didn’t need a man telling her what to do, or where to be, or what time to be home. She didn’t want to ask for permission to meet friends, see a movie, or take a barre class. She was turning fifty at the end of September, and she was done asking. Done getting permission for anything. Done compromising. And relationships were just one compromise after another. “I don’t hate men. I just don’t need to spend a lot of one-on-one time with any of them.”

Paige is content with her life. She loves her job as a math professor and her three grown daughters have their own satisfying lives. She has been out of her terrible marriage for eight years and has no desire to get back into the relationship game. (Being divorced in my fifties, I can so relate!)

When Paige gets recruited to co-teach a class with a visiting professor, she is not happy about the added work. Then she realizes that the professor is the same sexy Aussie she hooked up with thirty years ago, and not knowing what to do, she pretends to not know him. Of course he remembers her….

Jack is an Indiana Jones type of guy who travels the world doing field study. He is a widower with a grown son. The biology course they are co-teaching also includes a 3-week field study, so I enjoyed the different settings the book takes us to. But it was a little slow for me.

It was a slow-burn romance, which works for the age of the characters, as well as the workplace situation, but it just made the book itself a little slow as well. There wasn’t really any important conflict or anything overly exciting that made me want to rush to read and find out what happens.

Likes:

  • Older, smart characters.
  • Parents of grown kids.
  • I liked getting to go to Tanzania.
  • It was different than most books I read.
  • I loved Jack.
  • There was none of the stereotypical middle aged characterizations.
  • They mentioned the Pandemic instead of pretending it didn’t happen.

Dislikes:

  • It moved a little slow for me.
  • Needed some more of a conflict.
  • Not a fan of the cover.
  • She had a kind of strange relationship with her grown daughters.
  • I felt very ambivalent towards Paige. I didn’t love her or hate her.

The Down & Dirty:

I love reading about mature couples! Flirting with Fifty had so much potential but there was just something missing. It was a relaxing, easy read, but it was a little slow and needed some more conflict. I had mixed feelings about Paige. For me, I almost always need to LOVE the heroine to love the book, and we were in her head too much. Still, I enjoyed the read, I loved the hero, and really enjoyed the different settings and realistic older characters. I recommend it for someone who is specifically looking for older romance.

Rating: 3.5 Stars, 2.5 Heat

Mistletoe All The Way by Lauren Blakely took me ri Mistletoe All The Way by Lauren Blakely took me right back to the charming Christmas town of Evergreen Falls, and I loved being there again! 🎄❤️A grumpy, Christmas-hating veterinarian, a sunshine heroine who lives for the holidays, a fun Christmas competition, adorable animals, and a little mystery made this such an entertaining listen! And the full-cast duet narration led by Teddy Hamilton and Erin Mallon? SO GOOD! Lauren Blakely’s books are made for audio, and this one is no exception. This is book 3 in the Evergreen Falls series, but it can absolutely be enjoyed as a standalone. Perfect for getting into the holiday spirit! See my full review on the blog at anasattic dot com (link in bio)

Sound on (first slide) for a sample of the immersi Sound on (first slide) for a sample of the immersive audio! The Winning Formula by Cara Veloce was such a fun surprise! The F1 details felt accurate to the 2024 season, with just the right balance of racing and romance for both F1 and romance fans. But the immersive audio production is what really made this stand out. With dual, duet, and full-cast narration, race radio, announcers, track sounds, and more, it felt like I was right there at the track. I’ve already started the next audiobook in the series, Full Throttle, because I wasn’t ready to leave this world! If you want more F1 romance, I have a list of over 300 on my blog (link in bio). I work for @sawyerbennett123 so perhaps I’m a litt I work for @sawyerbennett123 so perhaps I’m a little biased, but Code Name: Harbor was like the perfect unputdownable listen. The suspense grabbed me from page one and never let go, plus there is a great forbidden romance, just the right amount of steam, and great narration. It’s the second book in the Jameson Force Seattle Series, and stands alone just fine. It was also one of my favorites of the year. I gave a more detailed review on my blog but held off on rating because I work for her. It’s live everywhere. The audiobook with Sean Masters and Erin Mallon is available in the Sawyer Bennett Bookstore or other retailers but not Amazon/Audible.
I picked up Vera Stein Is Fine by Julie Murphy fro I picked up Vera Stein Is Fine by Julie Murphy from NetGalley based on the cover alone, and I’m so glad I did. Vera is 40, plus-sized, childfree by choice, a little bit of a hot mess, and still trying to figure out what she wants from her life. She frustrated me sometimes, but she also felt incredibly REAL, and I never stopped rooting for her. This felt more like a coming-of-age story at 40 than a traditional romance, though there’s definitely a spicy second-chance romance in there too. I loved the quirky Starlight Palms crew, the humor, and seeing older characters living full, sexy lives.🎧 Narrated by Joy Nash with Teddy HamiltonSwipe for my tropes, quick take, ratings & audiobook info, then head to Ana’s Attic for my full review with all my Likes & Dislikes.
