Truth or Beard by Penny Reid
Narrated by: Joy Nash, Chris Brinkley
Book 1 in the Winston Brothers Series. Can Stand Alone.
I have loved Penny Reid and her smart humor for years. I have had Truth or Beard on my Kindle for 5+ years, but I just never got around to reading it. Since I knew so many people who love this series, I decided to finally grab the audiobook when I saw it was included in Audible Plus.
Short and sweet review? It just wasn’t for me.
Jessica has had a crush on Beau her whole life, but she hates his twin, Duane—her childhood nemesis. So she couldn’t believe her luck when her lifelong crush starts getting hot and heavy with her. That is until she finds out that the guy who she is now having dirty dreams about is the wrong twin, Duane.
I never really got past this deception. And while the book was moderately entertaining, it just wasn’t for me beyond some good witty dialogue. It was missing the “smart” that I thought Penny wrote. They all kind of seemed like country bumpkins. This could have been a result of the narration, but even the names, like Beau, Cletus, and Jethro just made me picture dirty, bearded, toothless hicks.
I am 100% in the minority here though. I don’t know another person that didn’t love this entire series, and there were parts I really loved, but the whole bearded small-town brothers thing just isn’t for me.
