The Paradise Problem by Christina Lauren
Narrated by Patti Murin and Jon Root
Standalone Contemporary Romance
“When you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
I’m wrapping up my year by reading and listening to some of the most hyped books to see if they deserve the buzz. The Paradise Problem by Christina Lauren was an easy pick—it’s everything I love in a book and written by authors I’ve adored in the past. While it’s not the most memorable read of the year, I completely understand the hype. This is a fun, breezy beach read that delivers humor, heart, and heat.
The Story:
Anna is a 25-year-old hot-mess artist. Years ago, she married Liam, who is now a professor, so they could qualify for family housing in college. They were never really together, barely even got to know each other during the two years they lived as roommates.
Fast-forward three years, and Liam unexpectedly shows up at Anna’s doorstep with a bombshell—they’re still married. Even worse, he needs to stay married for five years to claim his massive family inheritance. Now, he has to bring Anna to his sister’s high-society destination wedding on a private island and convince his toxic, judgmental family that they’re a happy couple.
They hardly know each other. She’s an eccentric artist with pink hair and odd jobs, and he’s from a world of wealth and privilege. Navigating his family’s expectations and trying to fake their way through this wedding puts their differences—and unexpected chemistry—to the test.
The Romance:
I absolutely adored Anna and Liam. They’re opposites, but each is lovable in their own way, and together they just work. Their relationship builds slowly, giving us time to know them as they learn about each other.
“I’m the only one here offering you unconditional support and love—and I’m not even asking you to choose me. I’m asking you to choose yourself. Because they won’t.”

Dislikes:
- A few plot holes that made parts of the story feel unbelievable.
- The wrap-up felt rushed and a little strange.
- It wasn’t very memorable and might not stick with me long-term.
The Narration:
Patti Murin and Jon Root were both fabulous narrators and brought the story to life. Their performances made the characters feel even more real and added charm to the already engaging dialogue.
The Down & Dirty:
The Paradise Problem by Christina Lauren lives up to the hype. It has everything I love in a romance—humor, heart, and heat—plus characters I wanted to be friends with. I laughed out loud and couldn’t wait to get back to listening every time I hit pause.
While it’s not the most unique story and probably won’t stick with me long-term, it’s well-written, fun, and completely engaging. It’s the perfect beach read—light, flirty, and easy to devour.
