Overnight Service by Lauren Blakely with The Engagement Gift Bonus story
Narrated by Jason Clarke, Emma Wilder and a FULL CAST.
Standalone in a series.
I listened to Overnight Service by Lauren Blakely and I really enjoyed it, but it felt like it was over so quick! So what did I do? I went back and listened again immediately, and it was even better the second time because I caught a lot of the detail that I can sometimes miss when I listen. I was saving The Engagement Gift (the bonus book at the end)—I knew it was hot AF and I wanted to make sure I was ‘in the mood’ (if you know what I mean).
The thing I have always loved most about Lauren Blakely’s books are the strong career women, and how the guys always respect it 100%. In Overnight Service, Josh and Haven are cutthroat competitors as sports agents. They had a fling in the past that didn’t end well, and they became each other’s business nemesis, always competing for the same athlete. But oh, the sexual tension!
“Why? Why the hell are you so goddamn sexy? Why do you do this to me?” She grabs my chin, yanks me closer.
“You think you’re the only one affected? You think this thing between us doesn’t make me as crazy as it makes you?”
“How crazy does it make you?”
I was surprised to see how early they reconnect in the book, but being fierce competitors brings a lot more issues to be worked out.
“He f**ks me like he hates me. Well, not entirely. In all honesty, he f**ks me like he hates me and wants me and needs me at the same time. Riddle on that.”
Overnight Service was a little quicker than most of Lauren Blakely’s books. The story didn’t suffer at all, but I was sad when it ended so quickly, until I started listening to The Engagement Gift. Holy hell, can you say HOT? Well say it again! This is the beginning of Lauren Blakely “after dark” books and if I thought I loved Lauren before, now it’s a whole new level of love.
Likes:
- Lauren Blakely’s wit and banter.
- Lots of little cameos from previous characters, but not so much that you feel like you missed something if you haven’t read them.
- A smart and feisty heroine succeeding in a “man’s world”.
- I loved all of the supporting players.
- Just an easy, fun, smart read.
- Steamier then many Lauren Blakely books.
- The bonus novella, The Engagement Gift. (HOT!!!)
Dislikes:
- I wish it were a teeny bit longer, it felt like it flew by even after the second listen.
The Narration:
Overnight Service was my favorite full-cast narration Lauren has done so far. It seemed very unobtrusive, and not at all like it was written specifically for an ensemble cast. There were no awkward silences during conversations and the different voices melded together beautifully. Sometimes the narration becomes more the focus than the story, but I think in this case the balance was spot-on. I loved the way it was mostly her POV but the other voices made it seem like omniPOV (is that even a thing?).
The Down & Dirty:
When you listen to a 7 hour audio, you don’t do it expecting you are going to turn around and listen again. But that’s just what I did! I wasn’t ready for Overnight Service to end. It was the perfect blend of humor, heart and HEAT! The full-cast narration just bumped it up that extra notch, and the banter and dialogue was just perfect. The bonus book of The Engagement Gift alone was worth it! Make sure you listen to that part when you, ummmmm, have a little ‘help’ (a man or batteries) because ?????.
Rating: 5 Stars, 5 Heat 5+ Narration
